Meetings:
The full Town Council meets eleven times a year on the
third Monday in each month. The Council appoints three main committees.
These committees and sub-committees usually make recommendations to the
Council and full Council ratification is required before decisions are
acted on. Sometimes urgent decisions are required and there is a mechanism
for this to be done if necessary to ensure that the best interests of
Northallerton are not prejudiced by undesirable delay. All Councillors
receive all the papers for every committee meeting and have the right
to attend and speak at them, although they are only allowed to vote if
they are a member of the committee. |
The Amenities Committee:
Meets on the last Monday of every month although this
year it is hoped to cut this down to the last Monday on a bi monthly basis.
It comprises seven Councillors which include the Mayor and Deputy Mayor
and looks after the Council's recreational facilities, which include The
Applegarth, Bullamoor Memorial Park, Bankhead Road and Dexta/Fergusson
Way including the children's play areas.
|
The Town Hall Management Committee:
This Committee meets on the first Monday of every month
although this is also being changed to bi monthly. The Committee also
comprises seven Councillors which include the Mayor and Deputy Mayor as
ex officio members. The Committee looks after the Town Hall building and
all matters relating to the Town Hall. It also oversees the Town Council's
significant contributions to the cultural life of Northallerton, whether
by making grants to organisers of events or arranging events itself.
|
|
The Twinning Committee:
Northallerton was officially twinned with Ormesson sur
Marne a suburb of Paris in 1994 and regular exchanges have taken place
over that time. This year some young people from Northallerton went to
Ormesson to compete in some sporting events. Council membership on this
Committee is open to any
Interested Councillor. The Town Council have in the past given a small
grant to this Committee.
|
The Grace Gardner Trust Committee: Meets bi monthly and comprises five Councillors. The Trust
was set up in the early 1960's after Grace Gardner left a sum of money
in Trust for the benefit of senior citizens resident within the boundary
of Northallerton Town. This was handed over to the Northallerton Town
Council to administer in the early 1980's and the proceeds from the investments
go to providing activities for this group. Currently the Trust sponsors
swimming sessions and runs an outing in the summer and Christmas shopping
in November. |
The Northallerton and Romanby Joint Burial Committee:
This Committee meets quarterly and is responsible for the Northallerton
cemetery. Council membership consists of four members from Romanby Parish
Council and four from Northallerton.
|
Finance and General Purposes Committee:
Meets quarterly and membership consists of the Chairman and Vice Chairman
of each Committee. The Committee is responsible for the Council 's financial
resources and to ensure that the various Committees keep within their
allocated budgets. They are also responsible for setting the Revised Estimates
and Estimates for the ensuing year as well as setting the Precept for
the following year.
|
Environmental Awareness Group:
This Committee is a sub Committee of the Amenities Committee
and membership is open to any interested Councillor or member of the public
who is interested in enhancing the appearance of the town. Although the
Council do make some financial provision for floral displays in the town
these are limited and the EAG has been very successful in raising sponsorship
monies for the roundabouts and tubs and hanging baskets in the town.
In the past Northallerton has been very successful in
the Yorkshire in Bloom competition and one year we were entered into the
Britain in Bloom competition.
Anyone interested in sponsoring a tub or hanging basket
or even a tree is asked to contact Mrs Kay Lambert the Clerk to the Committee
for details on 01609 776718 or email on
