Northallerton Town Economy & Society Situated close to the North Yorkshire Moors and around 15 miles east of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Northallerton has long acted as a stopping place on the route between London and the North. The town is a centre for local trade and agriculture. It features a Wednesday trading market that has been active since the 11th century as well as numerous nationally renowned fairs through the year. Although the town has been populated throughout Roman, Saxon, Viking and Norman times only one example of medieval architecture remains in the town; the All Saints church. More modern relics such as coaching inns remain where it is possible to sample locally brewed Theakstons ale. The core businesses
of Northallerton are agriculture and the High Street shopping trade. Although
tourism is on a relatively small scale here - places to visit, sports and activities
are available in and around Northallerton.
